Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned UK Technology to Track Down Afghans Who Worked With Western Forces, Investigation Hears
An informant has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind classified equipment allowing the militant group to identify local individuals that had served with allied troops.
Data Breach Endangers Thousands at Risk
The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were instructed to relocate and alter their contact details to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.
MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data concerning almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the UK to escape the Taliban.
How the Leak Happened
A data file including confidential details, comprising identities, phone numbers and sometimes relative details, was accidentally leaked by a worker stationed at British military command in February 2022.
The leak became known in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in the UK surfaced on Facebook.
Taliban Capabilities
Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain your phone number, they are able to track you down to within metres. That's precisely what the unit accomplished.”
When questioned about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, Person A stated: “They have complete capability.”
Consequences of the Information Leak
Initial findings provided to the committee estimated that approximately fifty relatives and co-workers of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.
A legal restriction regarding the breach was put in force in August 2023 and blocked all details regarding the matter from being made public until mid-2025.

Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she was working with informed affected households they were working with that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate where feasible and changed their contact details. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities obtained these details, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.
Disputed Conclusions
The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation conducted by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the records by militant forces was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not standing up to the Taliban; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to former occupations.”
The source explained disturbing abuse experienced by affected individuals, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
“Instances include four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
