The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
