The House Oversight Committee first legally compelled the property of Epstein, who passed away in a New York correctional facility in 2019 while facing trial on charges of sex trafficking, in August.

The images and files the Epstein estate gave to the panel are different than what is commonly referred to "Epstein-related records". That material are papers within the Department of Justice's possession associated with its own inquiry into Epstein.

Pursuant to the recently passed law, which Donald Trump signed into law recently, the DOJ has a deadline of 19 December to release its records. The scope of the contents contained in the DOJ's files is unclear, and it's likely that much of the information will be extensively censored, akin to House Oversight Committee documents
