Israeli citizens commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have assembled across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed state commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the morning session ended without tangible results, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to close the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Post-war management of the territory
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"When we see all home again, we can relax once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise necessary for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of Israelis desire the hostilities to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the site of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In Gaza City, bombardments were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the night arrives, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Situation
The medical facility in the urban area reported it had received the corpses of several people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area said two more victims had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, medics reported.
