Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities released video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
