New Jersey's top prosecutor resigns in the wake of appeals court deems ineligible her service.
The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has left her position as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This comes after a court battle that challenged her legal standing to occupy the role.
Acceptance of Resignation
US Attorney General, the Attorney General, accepted the prosecutor's departure on Monday. In a statement that the appeals court finding made it impossible for her to effectively run her office.
"Let no one confuse following the order as giving up," Habba stated. "This battle will now reach across the nation."
Court Ruling
Her resignation was triggered by a judicial panel determined that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This decision is likely to affect scores of prosecutions in the Garden State.
The judicial panel said that a temporary posting that skirted confirmation by the US Senate ran afoul of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The Attorney General added that the former prosecutor will continue working within the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. They intend to challenge the decision of the ruling, aiming for a different outcome.
On a social media platform, Bondi argued that the court "cannot be permitted to override the appointment of lawyers responsible for performing the primary duty of the administration of enforcing the law."
Record and Legacy
The attorney general highlighted the prosecutor's work and said that during her run, the Newark saw a 20% reduction in offenses. She also stated that the Camden recorded its first summer in half a century without a homicide.
Connection to Donald Trump
The 41-year-old attorney, was initially recruited to Trump's personal legal team in recent years. Subsequently, she represented the former president in his hush-money trial in 2024, which resulted in his guilty verdict on dozens of charges of financial record manipulation.
Earlier, assuming the top New Jersey post, Trump had revealed he was appointing her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, labeling her as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a relentless legal advocate.
