Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Despite Alerts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. Readings are forecast to be chilly, making warm wraps essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Broad Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

Readings Set to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Issued

At the same time, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to cause significant impacts across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely essential.
