New York's next mayor confirms plans to live in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm he would live there promptly after his victory in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Political Debate
During his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.
However his critics, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his previous Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
