As stated by a ex- senior officer from the UK's largest police force, police departments are now required to disclose the ethnic backgrounds of suspects in response to a rise in far-right speculation on social media platforms.

Recent Incident: Knife Attack on Train in Cambridgeshire

Early Sunday, UK rail authorities reported the arrest of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks aboard a train in the region. An individual, a 32-year-old black British national, and another, a 35-year-old British national with Caribbean roots, were taken into custody. Later, the older suspect was freed with no further action, and police confirmed he had no connection in the incident.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were issued to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had escalated after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport previously.

However, advocates have raised concerns that this approach could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of those accused and spark further extremist narratives when information are not shared with the public.

Insights from a Former Officer

Dal Babu, who worked in the UK's largest police force, described the need for police to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in cases involving people of colour as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He expressed understanding for his ex-peers in the force, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose district includes the area where the train halted, described it “sad” but necessary for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, adding that social media are used to advance narratives, making it critical for police to provide facts to address speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Before the police announcement, conservative figures had demanded a faster response. As an example, Chris Philp urged for prompt sharing of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the people needed to know “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, extremist profiles online attempted to exploit the incident. A profile named “British Patriot”—with nearly 5,000 followers—circulated an baseless allegation that a individual with a blade had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Despite authorities confirmed that the suspects were British nationals, certain individuals continued to insinuate that information was being withheld. Ben Habib stated it was “hard to believe” that the incident was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to police assurances indicating otherwise.
