The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
An recent initialism surfaced a couple of months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a child who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being intentionally shot at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, we are told, is what global togetherness looks like.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Ignore the report that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that initially championed harmony has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
