The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
