Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him without words and had to be resolved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he posted on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
