What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
